To force North Vietnam to negotiate, the u.s. government began the "Christmas bombings." These bombs hit North Vietnam 11 days straight except for Christmas. This forced negotiations and America pulled out after the end of the war seemed near. Two years after the negotiations,however, the peace agreement fell through.North Vietnam then attacked South Vietnam. South Vietnam called Nixon for help, but Nixon had resigned because of the Watergate scandal. The new president Gerald Ford asked congress for money for Vietnam but they refused. So in April North Vietnam captured the south capital of Saigon and renamed the city Ho Chi Minh City.
